Print Size Calculator

How big can you print your photo?

The size of a sharp print depends on how many pixels your photo has. Enter the pixel size of your image, or choose a camera, and this calculator shows the largest print you can make at 300, 240 and 150 dpi, and how well your photo fits each standard paper size from A6 to A0 and the common inch sizes. For example, a 24 megapixel photo (6000 × 4000 px) prints at 50.8 × 33.9 cm at 300 dpi. See also the paper size guide and my photo printing service.

Print size questions

How many megapixels do I need for an A4 print?

An A4 print at 300 dpi needs 2480 × 3508 pixels, which is about 8.7 megapixels. An A3 print needs about 17.4 megapixels and an A2 print about 34.8 megapixels at 300 dpi.

What is DPI in printing?

DPI means dots per inch, the number of image pixels placed in each inch of the print. More pixels per inch gives finer detail. 300 dpi looks sharp when held in the hand, and large prints viewed from a distance look good at 150 dpi.

Can I print a small or low resolution photo larger?

Yes, with software upscaling, but it cannot add real detail. A photo with fewer pixels than the calculator suggests will look soft at close range. Ask me and I will check your file before printing.

Why does the calculator show a crop?

Camera photos are usually 3 : 2, while A sizes are 1 : 1.414. To fill the paper the edges of the photo are cropped. The crop column shows how much is lost.
