Photography Drive Cost Calculator

How much does a photography trip cost in fuel?

Enter the distance, your car’s fuel economy and a fuel price to see what a trip costs. Add parking, passengers and trips per month for a yearly figure.

How the tool works

Fuel used is the distance driven times your consumption. With mpg, the page converts miles to litres using 4.54609 litres per UK gallon, so litres equal miles times 4.54609 divided by mpg. With L/100km, litres equal kilometres times the figure divided by 100. One mile is 1.609344 kilometres. The fuel cost is the litres times the price per litre.

The fuel price, the economy and the mileage allowance are example figures that you can change. They are not a price list or current rates, so type in what you actually pay at the pump. Real consumption changes with speed, load, hills and traffic, so treat the result as an estimate and compare it with your own fuel records.

If you enter a mileage allowance in pence per mile, the page compares the allowance for the miles driven with your fuel and parking cost. If you claim mileage for business use, check the current HMRC rates or ask an accountant, because what you can claim depends on your circumstances.

Questions

Is the fuel price on this page current?

No. It is an example figure. Replace it with the price per litre you pay.

Can I split the cost with other people?

Yes. Enter the number of people sharing and the page shows each person’s share of fuel and parking.

Is the mileage allowance field a tax rate?

No. It is a field for you to type a rate in pence per mile. Check the current HMRC rates or ask an accountant before you claim anything.
