Which interesting places are near me right now?
Share your phone location, or pick a nearby town, and the page lists hills, castles, ruins, water and parks nearby from the closest outwards, can add scenic viewpoints, and shows sunrise and sunset times for where you are.
How the tool works
When you tap the button, your phone asks whether this site may use your location. If you agree, the page asks Wikipedia for nearby articles that have a location, keeps the ones that describe hills, castles, ruins, water, parks and nature reserves, and sorts them by straight-line distance and compass direction from you.
Your exact position stays in the page on your device. To find places, only a position rounded to about a kilometre is sent to Wikipedia, and this site does not store it. If you tap the extra button for viewpoints, the same rounded position goes to the free OpenStreetMap Overpass service, which is often busy and may fail, so try again later.
Wikipedia and OpenStreetMap are edited by volunteers, so some places are missing, some are mislabelled and a few are on private land. A name on the list does not mean there is public access or a good photograph. Check access, opening times and parking before you travel, and stay on public paths. Sunrise and sunset times use the standard NOAA method for a flat horizon, so hills and trees near you will cut the real light short.
Questions
Why does my phone not ask for my location?
The page needs permission from your browser. If you refused it earlier, open the site settings for this page in your browser and allow location, then tap the button again. You can also choose a town from the list instead.
Where does the list of places come from?
From Wikipedia articles that have a location, filtered to hills, castles, ruins, water, parks and nature reserves. A button adds scenic viewpoints from OpenStreetMap, a free map made by volunteers.
Is my location stored?
No. Your exact position is used only inside the page. A rounded position is sent to Wikipedia to find nearby places, and this website stores nothing.
