Where to fly a drone around Coalville
Coalville sits in the middle of the National Forest, close to Charnwood, so there is a lot of varied landscape within a short drive. This guide lists the places I would look at first for aerial landscape photography, what each can offer from above, and what to check before you take off. It is a starting point for planning, not permission to fly.
Check before you fly
Many parks, nature reserves and heritage sites have their own rules for drones, and some ban them or ask for a permit. A site being open to walkers does not mean you can launch from it. Before every flight, ask the landowner or manager, read the signs at the entrance, check the airspace in a drone map app, and follow the current Civil Aviation Authority rules, including registration and the 120 m (400 ft) height limit. Keep your drone in sight, and stay away from people, roads and buildings.
Places to look at
Bardon Hill and the quarry edge
The hill is the highest point in Leicestershire, and the wide views over the National Forest suit panoramas at sunrise. The quarry is private land with its own safety rules, so keep clear of it and look at public viewpoints and footpaths.
Beacon Hill, Charnwood
A rocky summit with open views over Charnwood Forest. Early light and low mist can give strong layered shots. Ask the park managers about their drone policy first.
Old John and Bradgate Park
The ruined tower on Hunts Hill, with deer and old trees around it, is one of the best-known views in the area. The park is busy and well managed, so confirm what is allowed with the park before you plan a shot.
Sence Valley Forest Park
Lakes, young woodland and meadows near Ibstock. Water gives reflections in calm dawn light. Check with the park owner for their rules.
Ashby de la Zouch Castle and the Ashby Canal
The castle ruins and the long straight canal suit top-down compositions. The castle is a managed heritage site, so ask before flying near it. Along the canal, keep clear of boats, towpath walkers and bridges.
Mount St Bernard Abbey and the surrounding fields
The abbey sits in open farmland and woods, with soft evening light on the stone. It is a working religious community, so respect privacy and ask first.
Plan the day
Use the Drone Flight Check to see wind at drone height, gusts, rain and visibility for any of these spots, and the best flying window of the day. If you want a bracketed sunrise sky or a wide panorama, plan it with the Drone Panorama Planner. For slow water or smooth video, use the Drone ND Filter Calculator, and for framing a subject, use the Drone Photo Coverage Calculator.
Questions
Can I fly a drone in a country park?
It depends on the park. Many ask you to get permission first or do not allow drones at all. Contact the managers and read the notices on site.
What is the best time for aerial landscape photos near Coalville?
The first and last hour of daylight usually give the best light and the lowest wind. The flight check shows the golden hour and the calmest hours for your chosen day.
Do these places have drone permission?
This page does not give permission for any site. Rules change, so always confirm with the landowner before you fly.
