How do you work out a price for an event photography job?
Enter your own rate, hours, travel, editing time and extras. The tool builds an itemised quote with the total, deposit, balance and your effective hourly rate, and a text summary you can copy.
How the tool works
The quote adds up coverage (hourly, or a flat half or full day rate), travel at a per-mile rate, an optional second shooter, editing time, any images above the number included, and add-on items you name yourself, such as prints or an album. A rush uplift is a percentage of everything above it, then VAT is added if you switch it on, and the deposit is a percentage of the final total.
Every rate and percentage is an example figure, not a price list. Replace each with your own. Editing time is worked out as hours on site multiplied by an editing ratio you set, because the time spent after the event is often larger than the time on site. The effective hourly rate is shown both per hour on site and per working hour including editing, which is a useful check that a job pays.
This is a quote builder, not tax or legal advice. The VAT rate is an input you can change, so check the current rate and whether you need to charge it with HMRC or an accountant. Nothing you enter is stored or sent.
Questions
Are the rates in the tool real prices?
No. They are example figures so the page shows a result. Replace them with your own rates.
How is the effective hourly rate worked out?
It is the subtotal before VAT divided by your hours on site, and also divided by hours on site plus editing hours.
Do I have to charge VAT?
That depends on your circumstances. Check with HMRC or an accountant. The VAT switch and rate in this tool are only for building a quote.
